Gillian Harding

Thoughts of splashing about with paint propels her into the studio, and moving into abstraction has felt incredibly liberating. Gillian works with oil paints, oil pastels, and graphite on canvas, wood and paper, using brushes, squeegees and sponges to build layered surfaces. 

She enjoys the balance of addition and subtraction - applying and wiping away and scratching back into the work to reveal unexpected traces. Opposites fascinate her: matt and shine, small and large-scale, form and line, oppacity and transparency. Embracing chance and spontaneity, she uses colour intuitively, inviting the viewer to follow the journey of mark-making and to consider what remains hidden, revealed and inter-connected with each composition.
