Kurkova’s paintings deal with themes of identity and human connection, creating a collaged alternative universe, informed by mythology, iconography, and art historical references. Inspired by Byzantine art and Indian miniature, Renaissance hero’s journey, and contemporary color movement of Les Nabis, Anna weaves myths and personal experience into ongoing narratives. She often uses shaped canvases, making geometry of the panel an integral part of painting itself.
Kurkova’s practice straddles painting and printmaking as she utilizes monotype technique in which she makes a painting on an acetate matrix and then transfers it onto paper via an intaglio press. Pressure of the press distributes mineral pigments, watercolors, and gouache in unexpected ways, adding an element of chance and chaos through soft, fuzzy lines, imperfections and bleeds of color.
