Mary Lou Lawless-Gill (2004) is an artist who constructs fictional scenes from imagery drawn from photographs, film, music, and memory. Her work captures fleeting moments in the lives of recurring characters, forming fragments of an ambiguous urban narrative that seems to belong to a time both familiar and lost. Her paintings balance openness with concealment, exploring the complexities of human relationships and the contradictions inherent in how we present ourselves. Through subtle gestures and atmospheres, she reflects on the performances and masks we adopt in our attempts to be seen and understood.
Mary Lou Lawless-Gill is a painter living and working in Manchester. The city has become an important part of both her life and her practice. Born in London in 2004, she gained a UAL Extended Diploma in Visual Art and Design from The BRIT School in 2022, before going on to complete her BA in Fine Art and Design at Manchester School of Art in 2025. Now, as a graduate, she continues to make Manchester her home. Her artistic inspiration stems from the people she encounters and the everyday experiences of city life, exploring the melancholy, isolation, tenderness, and gentle humour that can exist within it.
