Gina Newson

Follow the paint!

Last year Gina Newson worked on lasge-scale abstracted portraiture - this year she's concentrating on small abstract squares, often over-painting older works, enjoyig a kind of archaeology of gestures.

She's mostly interested in the process; the push of letting go - being in the moment; and the pull - the more conscious response to what happens in the pictorial space. The way paint works, colour to colour, smooth to rough, random acrylic moments. Lettig herself be free in a place of ambiguity and feeling.

She always hopes to surprise herself, following the paint, not the rules, and then hoping the work will resonate.
