Rebecca Munday (b. 2001) is a London-based multidisciplinary artist working
across painting and sculpture. She completed her BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Chelsea
College of Arts (UAL) in 2023. Blending theatrical ambiguity with veiled, cinematic
atmospheres, her practice explores psychological containment, memory, and spatial
liminality. Through architectural forms, symbolic motifs, and fragmented figures, her
work navigates the tension between entrapment and escapism within surreal
environments. Key highlights include her solo exhibition Vanishing Point at Barbican
Arts Group Trust (2026), RBA Rising Stars semi-finalist, and exhibitions at Saatchi
Gallery and Faces Forward (Docent Art x Invisible Collection).
My practice investigates the human condition, memory, and the quiet tension
between physical environments and internal states. Drawing upon the visual
language of historical portraiture, archival imagery, and cinematic stills, I construct
staged realities that leave narrative deliberately open and unresolved.
Operating at the intersection of painting and sculpture, the work deconstructs
architectural frameworks - sharp angles, cage-like grids, and threshold spaces - to
build atmospheric, psychologically charged environments. Within these settings,
physical structures act as mirrors for internal states of entrapment and escapism.
Scale, perspective, and dramatic light collide to distort the viewer’s sense of control
and spatial reality.
Rather than offering linear narratives, I rely on symbolic motifs, bodily fragments, and
physical gesture to evoke emotional limbo. Figures exist in states of suspense - their
presence suggested through subtle posturing, veiled light, or cropped compositions -
paused on the precipice of an unseen transition. Through a controlled, atmospheric
palette and rich, tactile surface treatments, the work draws the viewer into a space
that ultimately confronts their own gaze.
