Overview

Back for its fifth year, The Hari Art Prize seeks to champion the remarkable talent that’s emerging in the arts at a grassroots level. The works which you see exhibited around the intimate lobby of this hotel are from the artists shortlisted this year.

There’s a great emphasis on abstraction in the paintings this year, explosive disintegration to create something new from the remains. Pure colour and texture washes across the surfaces of these works, leaving patterns like waves in the sand. On the other extreme are paintings which feel uncannily photorealistic like the works of Ella Trott and Grace McNerney.

Such material experimentation is reflected in the sculptures as well which are beyond playful. Whether it’s James Sibley’s boxed-up chandeliers or Saki’s violin bow and arrow, these pieces are bold statements.

Meanwhile classical mediums like marble and mosaics are being revised in a more modern context.
